"Tax authorities in Liechtenstein can rejoice"
Article in the NZZ, 2011
The tax amnesty in the Principality of Liechtenstein is considered a success, said Marco Felder, Head of the Tax Administration. The trustworthy self-disclosure process has encouraged many tax evaders to turn themselves in without fear of further consequences. Individuals who self-disclose this year only have to pay the back tax for five years, without penalties or interest. This attractive option is still available until the end of the year, after which surcharges and interest on arrears will become due. For discovered tax evaders, the penalties can be up to three times as high as the tax evaded. The reason for the amnesty was the entry into force of the new tax law at the beginning of 2011. Similar positive experiences were already made in the 1960s with an earlier amnesty. Since the beginning of the year, almost 400 people have reported themselves.
